Oregon taking steps to care for autistic children

First, a thank you to state Sen. Sara Gelser for visiting several out-of-state programs which care for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including children from Oregon. We are deeply saddened and concerned about some of the abusive treatment of vulnerable children mentioned in The Register-Guard article (Oregon under pressure to provide services for at-needs kids, Sept. 9).

As grandparents of a young man on the autism spectrum needing 24/7 supervision, we have witnessed how the proper care and family support can enable him to become a bit more independent and happy. We are grateful that Oregon plans to bring all children now in out-of-state care back to Oregon.

We are grateful that additional treatment centers and the hiring of more case workers will be provided. Perhaps a look at regional centers in California and how they are organized would be helpful as well.
