Transition to Adulthood – Panel Discussion @ Hilyard Community Center

The Autism Society of Oregon has scheduled a panel discussion at Hilyard Community Center from 1 to 3 pm on Saturday, Nov 16, about Transition to Adulthood, featuring Alisa McLaughlin and David Olson, and facilitated by Tobi Burch Rates. Parents, social workers, personal support workers, and people on the spectrum are all invited to attend and participate.

Alisa is a member of the KindTree Art Guild and editor of KindTree’s Newsletter “Reaching Out – Reaching In”.

David Olson facilitates KindTree’s monthly Advocacy Group, Eugene A.V.O.I.C.E Advocacy Group: 3rd Friday of the month from 4:30 to 6 pm at LILA Peer Support Club, 990 Oak Street.

Both David and Alisa are on the autism spectrum and volunteer at KindTree’s Friends & Family Camp.

Tobi Burch Rates has been the Executive Director of the Autism Society of Oregon since October 2011. Prior to becoming Executive Director, she served on the Board of Directors for ASO as a volunteer.

Social Skills Class and scheduled Social Outings @ St Mary's Episcopal Church

ASO sponsored Social Skills Class for Adults from 6:30-8pm at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 1300 Pearl St. (SW corner of 13th & Pearl).The Lane County Chapter of the Autism Society of Oregon supports a Social Skills Class and Scheduled Social Outings on alternating months, in response to interest by participants in KindTree – Autism Rocks’ Support Group for adults on the autism spectrum. The classes and outings are designed for adults with high-functioning autism or Aspergers who can get around independently in the community.

During the Social Skills Class, conversation skills will be taught, role-modeled and practiced. The class is taught by Doris Germain, an Autism Specialist in the Linn-Benton School District. She has taught social skills at Autism Training and Support in Eugene. Her skill in teaching social skills has been learned from 20 years of working with people on the spectrum. No support groups or social skills activities in August.

The Social Skills Class is taking place on the 3rd Monday of alternating months from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on 13th and Pearl in Eugene. The Social Skills Class will decide on the activity for the following month’s Social Outing.

The Social Outing is taking place on alternating months on the third Friday evening of the month from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. or during the day on Saturday, depending on the activity chosen by the previous month’s Social Skills Class.
